Ken Stevens, a 1985 Central Michigan University graduate, served as photo editor of CM Life and remained dedicated to giving back to his alma mater throughout his award-winning, nearly 30-year career.
Until his unexpected passing in October 2014 at age 51, Ken was a multimedia specialist for MLive Muskegon Chronicle. Since joining the Chronicle in 1986, he mentored countless student photographers and, beginning in 2009, coordinated the publication’s highly respected internship program.
Ken’s connection to CMU remained strong throughout his life. He was named the Department of Journalism’s Outstanding Alumnus in 2013 and was posthumously inducted into the CMU Journalism Hall of Fame in 2015.
Those who knew Ken remember his positive attitude, ready smile, and constant willingness to help aspiring photographers. Many of his former interns and colleagues—now successful, award-winning photojournalists across the country—continue to share stories of his guidance and generosity.
The Ken Stevens Scholarship was created to honor his legacy. It provides financial assistance to students who are Journalism majors, CM Life staff members, or Grand Central Magazine photographers with an interest in pursuing a media-related internship.

CMU alumni and friends, thank you for 1,000 gifts on GivingTuesday. We’re one more donor goal away from unlocking a $500 gift for the Finish Up Chips Scholarship that helps students who are near graduation. Give a gift to any fund to participate!
